The History of 5 Corners

The home that is 5 Corners Bed & Breakfast has been a part of Amherst history since the 1800's.  The home was built by the Braun Family on land once owned by settler Josiah Harris. Harris first arrived in Amherst in 1818 and liked the potential he saw. He selected a piece of land with a spring near Big Beaver Creek. This spring still sits today, in a park adjacent to 5 Corners Bed & Breakfast.

In 1830, Harris divided his land and started a village. This budding intersection became know as "The Corners." The first acre of land cleared in this area became the public square of Amherst and is where the Town Hall was later built. Today this intersection is called 5 Points.

As a dedication to the history and future of Amherst, 5 Corners Bed & Breakfast combined the best of both as their name, taking "5" from today's society and "Corners" from the past.

Harris went onto build Amherst into a thriving community. He served as Postmaster, Justice of the Peace, Sheriff, Senator and Judge.

While the community was growing, many had trouble growing and maintaining their crops. Large sandstone outcroppings interrupted the land. Around 1860, the first Cleveland and Toledo Railroad steamed down the Erie lakeshore and the sandstone was shipped worldwide. It was found to be of superior quality. Its durability, strength, texture and color would eventually make Amherst the "Sandstone Capital of the World." Today pieces of Amherst sandstone are located all over the world including the Kremlin and the home of Bill Gates.

Prior to becoming a Bed & Breakfast, the home served as a brewery, church, beauty parlor and, most recently, a single family home.
